I am reading about Georgia O'Keeffe lately. Apparently she said that her flowers were just flowers, nothing more. It surprised her to hear about all the sexual interpretations. I am wondering if the viewers' interpretations of what an artist creates are justifiable even if the artist themselves didn't intend to send the message. I am also wondering if perhaps she was struggling with issues of sexuality but could only express this unconsciously through her work. Who has the right to identify what the work is about?
